SHRINEScattered all throughout the dungeons and catacombs in Diablo are locations of great magic -- the shrines.

Most of the time, a shrine, which is activated when you step onto it, offers only a cryptic clue to its function.  These shrines either enhance your skills and abilities, provide assistance to your present predicament, or even bring a tell-tale blow to your capabilities.  It is for this reason that a player must be cautious of accessing a shrine.  Knowing what a particular shrine does is surely an added advantage to a player.

GOAT SHRINEAll shrines in the Dungeon levels (1 to 4) are correspondingly named, and some shrines in the Catacomb levels (5 to 8) are similar.  Goat Shrines in the Catacombs generate random shrine effects, so utmost care and caution is observed before attempting to access these shrines.  No shrines exist in the Cave levels (9 to 12).  In the deep Hell levels (13 to 16), Cauldrons await near the corners.  These Cauldrons are similar to the Goat Shrines, for they also generate random shrine effects.  Caution and vigilance must be also observed before accessing these unpredictable magical devices.

CAULDRONHerein is a complete list of shrines, the message each of them bestows, and their effects.  Although not all of these shrines can help a player, it is worthy to remember the shrines that DO help, so as to remove doubts and hesitations before accessing one of these powerful magical devices. Sometimes, as in the case of the Cryptic Shrine, the Thaumaturgic Shrine, and the Spiritual Shrine, it clearly behooves a player to prepare before triggering the effect....

Also included are the shrines in Hellfire, the official add-on to Diablo, as well as other "shrine-like" structures that affects the player when they are accessed. Take the time to see which structures are beneficial, so that they can be of help in the long run.

Adds 2 points to Dexterity

CREEPY

Adds 2 points to Strength

"Strength is bolstered by heavenly faith."
CRYPTIC

Fills Mana ball, casts nova spell from player.

"Arcane power brings destruction."
DIVINE Gives out 2 full rejuvenation potions or a Full Mana and a Full Healing potion, while filling both Mana and Life balls. "Drink and be refreshed"
EERIE Adds 2 points to Magic. "Knowledge and Wisdom at the cost of self."
ELDRITCH Health and Mana potions become Rejuvenation. "Crimson and Azure become as the sun."
ENCHANTED One spell down a level, all others up one level. "Magic is not always what it seems to be."
FASCINATING Firebolt spell level gains +2, but 1/10 of maximum Mana is lost. "Intensity comes at the cost of Wisdom."
GLIMMERING All items are identified. "Mysteries revealed in the light of reason."
GLOOMY Adds 2 points to AC of all shields, helmets and armor, -1 to all weapons' max damage. "Those who defend seldom attack."
HIDDEN Adds 10 points to the maximum and current durability of all items, -10 to one. "New strength is forged through destruction."
HOLY Teleports character to another place in the level. "Wherever you go, you are there."
MAGICAL Casts Mana Shield on player. "While the spirit is vigilant the body thrives."
MYSTERIOUS Adds 5 points to one random stat, takes 1 point from others. "Some are weakened as one grows strong."
ORNATE Holy Bolt spell level gains +2, but 1/10 of maximum Mana is lost. "Salvation comes at the cost of Wisdom."
QUIET Adds 2 points to Vitality. "The essence of life flows from within."
RELIGIOUS "Heals" all weapon durability. "Time cannot diminish the power of steel."
SACRED Charged Bolt spell level gains +2, but 1/10 of maximum Mana is lost. "Energy comes at the cost of Wisdom."
SECLUDED Completes the automap for current level. "The way is cleared when viewed from above."
SPIRITUAL Fills player's inventory with gold. "Riches abound when least expected."
SPOOKY Gives Full Rejuvenation potions to other players. YOU: "Where avarice fails, patience gains reward."

OTHERS: "Blessed by a benevolent companion."

STONE Recharges all staves. "The powers of Mana refocused renews."
TAINTED All other players get +1 to +3 random stats, -1 to other. YOU: "Those who are last may yet be first."

OTHERS: "Generosity brings its own rewards."

THAUMATURGIC All chests regenerate with new items, and all open doors become closed. "What once was opened now is closed."
WEIRD Adds 1 point to all weapons' maximum damage. "The sword of justice is fast and sharp."

~ HELLFIRE SHRINES ~

NAME EFFECT MESSAGE
OILY Adds 2 points to character's
primary statistics
(+2 Str for Warrior, +2 Mag for Sorcerer, +1 Dex and +1 Mag for Rogue, and +1 Str and +1 Dex for Monk). Casts single-square pillar of fire where you stand.
"That which does not kill you ..."
GLOWING

Adds 5 points to Magic,
removes 5% of experience points.

"Knowledge is power."

MENDICANT

Takes half of player's money and adds
that amount to experience points.
"Give and you shall receive."
EDISON or SPARKLING Zaps player with an electric spell.
Player gains experience points based on
his level and his current dungeon level.
"Some experience is gained by touch."
TOWN Casts Town Portal spell. "There is no place like home."
ENERGETIC Refills player's Mana ball. "Spiritual energy is restored."
MURPHY 1/3 chance of damaging a random
equipped item. Otherwise,
player loses 1/3 of his or her gold.
"That which can break will."
SOLAR (Between noon and 6 pm)
adds 2 points to Strength.

(Between 6 pm and 8 pm)
adds 2 points to Magic.


(Between 8 pm and 4 am)
adds 2 points to Vitality.


(Between 4 am and noon)
adds 2 points to Dexterity.

"You feel stronger."

"You feel wiser."


"You feel refreshed."


"You feel more agile."

~ NON-SHRINE MAGICAL DEVICES ~

Not all magical devices that can be accessed by the player are shrines.  Commonly found in the Dungeon and Catacomb levels, these shrine-like devices generate specialized effects, mostly in assisting the player in that level, and some of them can be accessed repeatedly.  

FOUNTAIN OF TEARS
FOUNTAIN OF TEARS

This fountain, when accessed, adds 1 point to one random attribute and takes away 1 point from another random attribute. Commonly found in the catacombs.

 

MURKY POOL
MURKY POOL

This pool, when accessed, gives the player Infravision for s short duration, or depending on the character's level. This device is scarcely located in all the levels of the labyrinth except the Cavern levels.

 

BLOOD FOUNTAIN
BLOOD FOUNTAIN

This fountain, when accessed, restores 1 Life Point in the player's Life ball. It can be used as many times as the player wants until he or she regains full health. Very common in both the Church and Catacomb levels.

 

PURIFYING SPRING

PURIFYING SPRING

This spring, when accessed, restores 1 Mana Point in the player's Mana ball. It can be used as many times as the player wants until his or her Mana ball is completely replenished. Common in the Church, Catacomb, and Hell levels.
