A rant about rain…

The rain has stopped … for now … and I am glad … for now …

I always hated the rain. Back in the Flip Lands, we get rain 75% of the year. We also get typhoons, super typhoons, flashfloods, mudslides and even the occasional tidal wave. When I was a kid, I loved the rain. I always went out and took a shower during rainstorms. Ignore the fact that I may get hit by lightning (which I never did), but I ran in the middle of the street, barefoot, gargling rain water and drenching myself. It’s a tropical country, so there wasn’t anything chilly about the rain. But that was long ago.

Only recently have I come to hate it, mainly because it always flooded in our neighborhood when I was in high school. Always, as in, everytime it rained more than an hour, it floods. An hour of rain is about 2 inches of flood water in our neighborhood. Bad drainage? Clogged pipes? Garbage build-up in the sewers? Or is it just because our neighborhood is just a teeny weeny bit below sea level – with Manila Bay being less than 3 miles from our home?

Whatever the reason may be I have come to hate rain. My temper begins to flare up everytime it rains. Everytime I see rain, the first thing that I think about is when it would stop. I hate bringing umbrellas. I hate wearing raincoats. I hate hiding under narrow shades just to avoid being drenched. I hate it when the water seeps into my socks and soaks my feet. I hate it when I have to take off my glasses to avoid fogging up or getting peppered with raindrops. I hate the movement and the sound of windshield wipers.

I just …. hate … rain….
